Veteran musician jailed
Gil Scott-Heron is sentenced for breaking a plea deal
Veteran musician Gil Scott-Heron has been jailed for violating a a plea deal on a drug charge.

The 57-year-old was sentenced to two to four years at New York's Queens Supreme Court after leaving the rehab clinic where he was being treated, reports the New York Post.

Scott-Heron, who had a series of hits in the 70s including 'The Revolution Will Not Be Televised' and 'The Bottle', told the court the drug treatment centre stopped giving him his HIV medication and since Scott-Heron is HIV positive, he left.

But the court ruled that he violated his plea deal by leaving the centre he was placed in and he must now serve time in prison.

The show's final edition will air on Sunday 30th July.

In a press statement released this afternoon, BBC Director Jana Bennett said: "We're very proud of a show which has survived 42 years in the UK and gone on to become a worldwide brand, but the time has come to bring the show to its natural conclusion. Although we bid a fond farewell to Top of the Pops we remain as passionate as ever about reflecting the vitality of contemporary music across all our channels."

Roly Keating, Contoller, BBC TWO added: "I've really enjoyed the last year that Top of the Pops has transmitted on BBC TWO and the team did a stirling job in revitalising the format for our audience, but we all recognise that the time has come to move on."

However, "The end of the weekly show does not mark the total disappearance of the Top of the Pops brand from British television screens. It will continue to feature in programmes such as TOTP2, BBC TWO's archive show based on the Top of the Pops back-catalogue which will sometimes incorporate new performance, as well as one-off specials."

ST ETIENNE, France: Djibril Cisse will miss the World Cup after fracturing his right leg in France's 3-1 win over China in their final warm-up game on Wednesday.

"He is in hospital and he's undergoing surgery," French coach Raymond Domenech said after the match. "It's a vicious blow to all of us.

"Everything was going so well. All the players are depressed. Even during the game you could see it. They just lost interest."

Lyon forward Sidney Govou has been called into the squad to replace Cisse.

French Football Federation president Jean-Pierre Escalettes said Cisse had fractured his right fibula and tibia. The Liverpool forward was hurt in a clash with a Chinese defender 10 minutes into in his team's final friendly.

Grimacing with pain, Cisse was taken away on a stretcher and received treatment on his right leg for several minutes before going to hospital.

"I was just beside him when he fell and I heard him yell," said France striker Thierry Henry.

"Losing a teammate and a friend like that just before a World Cup, it's really tough."

Cisse, who had been expected to start France's opening World Cup game against Switzerland in Stuttgart on Tuesday, missed the European Championship finals two years ago through suspension. The 24-year-old was then sidelined for several months after breaking his left leg in an English Premier League game in October 2004.

A non-playing member of France's 2002 World Cup squad, Cisse was looking forward to featuring in a major tournament for the first time.

"The rule is that we can replace an injured player until a day before the first match," Domenech said. "For the moment I have other worries. Then we'll think about it and talk about it between us."

Zinedine Zidane, who will retire after the Cup and was playing his last match in France, missed a penalty in the 15th minute after he was brought down in the box.

Despite the miss, the captain stepped up a gear after below-par performances lately.

As exclusively revealed last month in Hot Press magazine, Ian Brown, The Prodigy and The Streets will headline the inaugural Hi-Fi Ireland boutique festival on August 5 and 6.

Taking place at Belevedere House near Mullingar, there will be five stages and, like the Electric Picnic, all manner of side-attractions.

Also making the trip to the Midlands are Mylo, Paul Oakenfold, Sasha, Deep Dish, Carl Cox, Tiesto, Audio Bullys, Digweed, Judge Jules, Shit Disco, Caged Baby, Art Brut, Pony Club, Infadels, to name just a big handful.

The botty-shaking nature of the event reflects the fact that the promoters, MCD, recently acquired the UK’s Godskitchen dance organisation.
